Minutes
Good Works Team
July 7th, 2009
9:00 a.m.
The meeting began with devotions led by Martha. In attendance were Charles Curry, Glen Langston, Delton Botkin, Flora Mae Gay, Betty Young and Martha Vogely.
Charles reviewed the highlights from our last meeting. A copy of the minutes was not available so we referred to our notes from the previous meeting. A copy of “Three Simple Rules, A Wesleyan Way of Living” was given to those attending this meeting. Last meeting we had discussed the three principle themes in the book and Rev. Langston obtained copies from the District office. He mentioned that he would be working on a sermon series based on this book.
Update on New Outreach initiatives:
The Lancaster trip was well attended and had a $0 impact on church funds. It required a great deal of planning and directing by Charles. The reviews from attendees have been very positive. No definite decision on when or if we will sponsor future trips.
The Night of Gospel music was discussed. “The Coachmen” will perform at the Church on August 23rd at 6:00 p.m. There will be a love offering collected. It was noted that someone will need to be posted at both doors leading out of the sanctuary. Betty will check to see how long they will play. After the concert a reception (with finger food) will be held in either the Fellowship Hall or outdoors (depending on the weather). Posters are available online. Charles was going to try printing one off. Sandy Crummett will be helping with the advertising/promotion of the concert.
The “Older Ministry” (final name not determined) was discussed. The suggestions made included: -to have feature articles in the newsletter, testimonials during Sunday services, and a meeting with Annie Pierce, District Consultant on Adult Ministries. Glen mentioned that Annie had a booklet on Sr. ministries had might be helpful. Glen said he would make contact with her and set up a meeting.
The Disaster Relief Project was discussed. Glen mentioned that the District was looking for a home to target for this ministry. So far the choices have been too far away and no local needs were identified. Charles said he would look into local needs. Glen mentioned Equipping the Saint (a storehouse/ store of supplies that are less expensive and available for church ministries. There was also mention of the “Wood Ministry” supported by the Ministerial Association.
The “Yard Sale” or “Give and Take” ministry was discussed. Melissa Simmons and Barbara Michael are in charge but were not available for an update. This project is on hold till after the first of the year.
The Baseball Ministry was discussed. Charles has been trying to find someone to coach a team for the church. Glen is to check with the Ministerial Association to see if there are any teams organized at the other churches. Charles mentioned that some equipment had been bought for the Parnassus team. It was suggested that this may need to be a next year project since it was late in the season already.
There was some discussion on the recommendation that the Outreach Ministry have a line item in the next budget. A suggestion was made to use the Fundraiser balance as discretionary funds for the Good Works projects.
Charles volunteered to do devotions at the next meeting. Meeting adjourned
