Minutes

Good Works Team

August 2, 2009

In attendance: Charles Curry, Glen Langston, Flora May & Sam Gay, Martha Vogely, Betty Young.

Charles read devotions from Matthew chapters 5 and 6.

We reviewed the minutes of our last meeting and approved the minutes as it.

Status of current ministry projects:

·         The Gospel music group, “The Coachmen” are still scheduled for Sunday, August 23rd. The time has been changed to 7:00 p.m. Betty will contact the group to set the duration time of the concert (1 hour is planned). Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship hall (donated cookies and punch). Sandy Crummet is distributing posters and contacting radio stations. Martha will put out a sign-up sheet for cookies.

·         Older Ministry (still working on a name).

Ann Pierce has been out of town – Glen talked with her about coming to talk with us on Sr. Ministry ideas. The Good Work team and any one in the congregation will be invited. It was suggested that during Joys and Concerns, people mention those who want /need visitation. Betty mentioned that other churches have a visitation committee – monthly meet and schedule visitations. Glen will put a “featured” shut in, or senior member in the newsletter.

Don’t want to overlap with things already being done – but want to enhance the plans.

·         Wood Project – Charles plans to attend the community project and bring a chain saw. Flora Mae said he was welcome to borrow their wood splitter.

·         Disaster Relief (District Project) – will be in Tenn. or West VA. Will send in First Responders, then determine where the greatest need is. Work to be done mid-August or a long weekend in Nov. Glen would like to get a volunteer or two to attend.

·         Baseball Ministry – Glen contacted pastors in our area and got a “we’ll think about it” response. Will push harder next spring to get a league going.

New Ideas:

·         Mission Sundays – Glen is planning one Sunday a month as a Mission Sunday. Different programs would be presented, covering a variety of mission options. Glen distirbued a list of the first three programs. Some will dedicated the whole worship service to the mission presentation, others will be shorter (approx 10 min). Wants a list drawn up for the other months. Charles said he would contact Steve Softly (sp?) about prison ministries and Louise Jenning about Knigsway ministries. Another suggestion was to have someone who has done a traditional mission – Glen suggested Bob May (a career missionary). Also, B. Breeding, the district layleader – has been to middle east.  It was noted that she had come to the church before.

·         Weekly Religious Education – could be brought in for a presentation.

·         Children’s Collection – Glen mentioned that starting in 2010, the money in the Children’s Collection account would be managed by the children. People for different organizations will be invited to present their causes, and the children will determine how the money is to be divided up and donated. The will report their decisions to the congregation.

·         Valley Mission in Staunton – Glen talked with them about doing a program/presentation.

·         Christmas family – Glen raised his concern about December. Wants to outreach to families and provide Christmas dinners.

·         FYI – Glen mentioned letters were going out to those who held elected positions. This doesen’t address non-elected positions. So will have a different notification for our Mission Comminsion.

Next meeting will focus on on-going activities. Scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 1st.

Glen will bring devotions.
